Multiple Solutions

Achieving compatibility between the airport and the surrounding neighborhoods requires more than a single approach in order to be effective. Several varied and unique approaches are working collectively to ensure that the Dallas Love Field Noise Control Program is successful. These techniques work together to reduce and to redirect the noise impacts away from the more populated areas around the airport through:
  • A comprehensive voluntary noise control program;
  • A noise abatement advisory committee;
  • 24 hour noise complaint recording and investigation; and
  • Introduction of the new generation of quieter aircraft into the commercial and general aviation fleets.
Through these techniques, significant progress has been achieved and continued improvement is expected in the future.

Noise Control Program

On December 16, 1981, the Dallas City Council officially adopted the Dallas Love Field Noise Control Program after an extensive and detailed evaluation of the noise impact of aircraft operations at the airport. Working with consultants, the City of Dallas together with neighborhood representatives, aviation industry leaders, and Federal Aviation Administration officials developed and implemented a voluntary program to responsibly address the noise issue and effectively reduce the adverse impact of aircraft operations at Love Field.

The most effective measures in the program include:
  • Nighttime Preferential Runway for turbojet aircraft and aircraft weighing over 12,500 lbs.
  • Trinity Departure for Night Operations on Runway 13R for turbo jet aircraft and aircraft weighing over 12,500 lbs. when air traffic flow is to the South.
  • Established Channelization Tracks and Altitude Restrictions for Helicopters.
Other Measures Include:
  • Requesting all departing aircraft to use optimal take-off profile for noise abatement purposes;
  • A prohibition from midnight to 6 a.m. on all maintenance run-ups;
  • Requesting that all aircraft execute rolling take-offs when practicable;
  • Prohibition against training flights between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.;
  • Turbojet arrival flight tracks; and more.

Airport Carbon Accreditation

As a vital member of the community, the City of Dallas Department of Aviation is committed to ensuring that our development and operations occur in a manner that promotes the sustainability of our natural environment. Utilizing the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System framework, designed to continuously and systematically improve our environmental performance, we set objectives and targets that improve the quality of air, land, and water.

In alignment with the Environmental Policy of the City of Dallas, the Department of Aviation is committed to a clean, safe, and healthy environment. Improvement of air quality is an essential component of this commitment to environmental stewardship. The Department of Aviation has prioritized advancing this effort through initiatives focused on greenhouse gas emissions reductions, increased energy efficiency and waste minimization. As a demonstration of this commitment, the Department of Aviation has set a goal of achieving a 10% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions below 2015 levels per enplaned passenger by 2025.

In support of this goal, the Department of Aviation will participate in the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. The ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation Program is a voluntary global carbon management standard for airports. This standard provides a framework and guidance for implementing best practices in carbon management with the ultimate objective of achieving carbon neutrality. Entering into this standard accreditation process will allow us to make significant strides to improve air quality and move towards a healthier and more sustainable future.
